The characteristics of this paradigm are that the schema of the data management system is fixed and the all of the data in a system is collocated with the query engine (silos). The next forty years will be characterized by the Distributed Information Management System (DIMS) and will feature constantly changing schemas describing widely distributed data and other information types. RDF, OWL, SPARQL, and RIF are the semantic technologies that enable this paradigm shift. This talk discusses the architecture of the DIMS and compares and contrasts it with the RDBMS model. Reference implementations will also be discussed.
