Bacterial and viral-caused infectious diseases account for major health threats globally, yet discovery of causal relationships and preventive measures have been scientifically challenging. While a wealth of information (and even complete microbial genomes) exists, its integrated use in context of biological systems to understand mechanisms and similarities in infectious diseases is just starting. \n? Semantic technology excels through its contextual integration of multiple resources and the creation of biological signatures via semantic (SPARQL) queries\n? This methodology identifies peptides from different microorganism with common disease causing mechanism, and uses them as marker-based decision support to detect and categorize pathogenic microbial threats\n.\n? Semantic integration of experimental data with public resources (PATRIC, ICTV, VIDA, Viral ORFeome, miRBase, BioCyc, KEGG) leads to a knowledgebase with functionally categorized protein families, including bacterial or virus-specific genes and their disease-related pathways. Its biological signatures (Applied Semantic Knowledgebases) assist in outbreak prevention and provide insights into microbial threats.
